In spite of the fact that the two offer a portion of similar standards, they vary in numerous regards and it isn't amazing that supporters of each kind accept emphatically that their favored framework is the most alluring and best speaks to that which portrays the corrective framework. Hattery, 2007) The Pennsylvania framework was brought into American culture by the Quakers and is by a long shot the more preservationist of the two prison frameworks. The strict Quakers tried to supplant the current remorseless techniques for discipline that had been related with flogging with ordered at this point profitable work serious strategie s. Preceding the edified Quakers passage into the correctional framework, crooks were mishandled on account of both formal and casual governments. Detainees were managed the chance to associate with one another while working and they were likewise permitted to eat suppers together. Under this model, socialization and conn ections were not seen as an adversary of discipline; rather, connections and socialization were viewed as that which was inescapable. Under the New York framework, detainees were doled out independent cells where they rested. For the most part, this was the main type of disconnection permitted under the New York framework. Despite the fact that there appeared to be less inflexibility than that of the Pennsylvania framework, rules were carefully implemented. During this period, various detainees of war who happened to be of German and Italian nationality were housed on American army installations and had to give jail work. The POWs were treated similarly as current detainees are dealt with. The Prisoners were required to work while being hung on the army base and were relied upon to hold fast to all jail camp strategies. Since World War II, the jail framework in the United States has developed enormously. A to some degree predictable consequence of this development has been the advancement of jail work. Detainees all through the nation work in various assembling and administration ventures. The development of jail work in the United States has gone under assault by the two Americans and human rights advocates far and wide. Numerous individuals contend that the United States is double-dealing since it impugns Chinaââ¬â¢s utilization of jail work while empowering the privatization of detainment facilities at home. An Essay on Methland - 1094 Words
Methland, Markets, and Massacres ââ¬Å"If ever there was a chance to see the place of the small American town in the era of the global economy, the meth epidemic is itâ⬠(Reding, 16). The town of Oelwein in Nick Reddingââ¬â¢s book Methland, through its illicit involvement in the meth epidemic, serves as a painful example to the effectiveness of this ââ¬Å"global economy,â⬠or in terms of the subject of this essay, the modern national-level market. The concept of a market is one that Meredith L. McGill tactfully delves into in her essay Market; the concepts from her essay will be used to analyze the specific market for meth in the book Methland. SUMMARY OF ESSAY The essay in question offers historical background and context to the current meaning of aâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Jobs quickly became scarce and underpaid. This change forced those who had jobs to work long straining hours. Redding writes that ââ¬Å"The truly singular aspect of methââ¬â¢s attractiveness is that since its first wide scale abuseâ⬠¦meth has been associated with hard work.â⬠(Redding, 16). Because of its effectiveness to sustain an individual through days of sleepless labor, demand was high. Like mentioned previously, where there is high demand and ability to supply, the dynamics of the ââ¬Å"newâ⬠market begin to take full effect. An interesting aspect of the meth market in the book Methland, and one that ties into McGills definition of market, were the different components of the meth distribution system which networked together to make it all work. McGill notes in her essay that on unique and often beneficial attribute of the modern market is that it is not regulated. This allows for a system which seeks to achieve maximum efficiency and, if a suitable supply and demand is established, the system will, on a large scale, form a network of independent components which ultimately compose a whole body ââ¬â not necessarily managed yet extremely effective. This pattern is seen in Methland. The main components of the meth market ââ¬â within and without Oelwein ââ¬â were the outside suppliers and distributers, local meth ââ¬Å"cooks,â⬠and customers ââ¬â i.e. addicts. In the book these all worked together with the same magnitude of efficiency

Ancient Greece Gods In Odyssey - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 791 Downloads: 5 Date added: 2019/04/01 Category Literature Essay Level High school Topics: Odyssey Essay Did you like this example? ââ¬Å"Is it better to be feared or loved?â⬠The Italian historian Niccolà ² Machiavelli believes that while both are important for a leader, fear is more likely to lead to a successful rule. The gods of Ancient Greece emphasize the importance of religion and tell stories of severe consequences if they are not pleased. Books 10, 13, and 17 of the Odyssey, by Homer, demonstrate how the ancient Greeksââ¬â¢ respect for the gods stems mostly from fear of the consequences, explaining multiple charactersââ¬â¢ decisions to protect themselves by respecting the gods to avoid consequences. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Ancient Greece Gods In Odyssey" essay for you Create order The reference of the punishment which results from helping the enemy of a god in book 10 shows the Greeks fear of the gods. In Book 10, Odysseus seeks help from the wind god Aeolus, in order to return home after the long war. Aeolus follows the expectations of hospitality, welcomes guests and provides a way for all the crew to go home, as Aeolus ââ¬Å"set the west wind free to blow us on our wayâ⬠¦ homeâ⬠(The Odyssey 10.29-30). Disrespecting xenia can result in punishments as Zeus, the king of the gods, is the god of hospitality. When Odysseus makes a mistake and ends up back on Aeolusââ¬â¢s island, Aeolus angrily yells: ââ¬Å"Away from my island- fast- most cursed man alive! Itââ¬â¢s a crime to host a man or speed him on his way when the blessed deathless gods despise him so. Crawling back like this- it proves the immortals hate you! Out- get out!â⬠(The Odyssey 10.79-83). By returning to the island, Odysseus unintentionally portrays himself as a curse from the gods, which is why Aeolus is displeased to see him again. If Odysseus is a godââ¬â¢s enemy, then he is everyoneââ¬â¢s enemy, no matter how famous he was before. He no longer deserves any respect or help of any kind from anyone. Another example of the punishment resulting from helping the enemy of a god is in Book 13, where the Phaeacians sail Odysseus back to Ithaca, and resulted in being cursed themselves. Even though they supplied Odysseus as they would any guest, they had not had understood that their patron god, Poseidon, was fully against Odysseus reaching his home. Earlier in the story, Odysseus had stabbed Polyphemus, the Cyclops and the son of Poseidon, which had resulted in Poseidon vowing that Odysseus would not return to his home. Poseidon ââ¬Å"with one flat stroke of his hand struck [the ship] to stone, rooted her to the ocean floor and made open for seaâ⬠(The Odyssey 1 3.185-187). Gods are meant to be viewed as efficient leaders, role models and friendly companions to the people, however, Poseidons actions show that gods are more like humans, holding grudges and fostering feelings of hatred. Even though he does care of the Phaeacians, stoning them emphasized that they made a critical mistake and should learn how to differentiate his friends from his foes. The consequences of their actions show that although Greeks must display hospitality to all visitors,, they cannot do so to those who have angered the gods. Disrespect to others shows disrespect towards the gods. Book 17 shows Antinous throwing a stool towards Odysseus, disguised as a beggar, which is not acceptable behavior towards guests. Antinous, the ill-mannered of the suitors: ââ¬Å"gave him a scathing look and let fly, ââ¬ËNow you wonââ¬â¢t get out of the hall unscarred, I swear, not after such a filthy string of insults!ââ¬â¢ With that he seized the stool and hurled it- Square in the back it struck Odysseus, just under the right shoulderâ⬠(The Odyssey 17.507-511). Injuring others, especially guests, is against the rule of hospitality as gods may be guests in disguise. Antinous portrays his distrust of the gods by not following this rule and shows arrogance as he believes that a beggar is not up to his standards. In addition, even the other suitors fear the consequences Antinousââ¬â¢ behavior as his ââ¬Å"fate is sealed if heââ¬â¢s some god from the viewâ⬠(The Odyssey 17. 534). This advice shows the common reaction in ancient Greece. Instead of being angered by Antinousââ¬â¢ rudeness, they are scared that the gods will curse them. In ancient Greek society, they did not consider actions morally and personally, instead aiming to merely please the gods. People of Ancient Greece feared and respected the gods. They tried to be on their best behavior at all times in order to please the gods and avoid any trouble. They feared the consequences of helping enemies of the gods or disrespecting the guests or hosts of a house. Even today, people pretend to be generous only to benefit themselves or make themselves look more superior than they actually are. Fear of punishment encourages people to follow strictly under the rule of upper beings.

William Shakespeare s The Glass Menagerie - 878 Words
In the past, I have seen two Shakespeare live performances so I decided I wanted to switch it up to another playwright. I chose Tennessee Williams, The Glass Menagerie. The performance was outstanding. During the previous Shakespeare performances Iââ¬â¢ve seen, I slept through the play including intermission. Yet, during Williams, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time with 100% of my attention drawn straight to the performance. The setting of the play brought on an almost ââ¬Å"at homeâ⬠type of feel. Just looking at the stage made me feel like I was at my grandmother s house. The Glass Menagerie is about a small family in St. Louis. Thereââ¬â¢s a portrait of the deceased father/husband on the wall, who they often refer to throughout the play. The daughter, Laura Wingfield, has a limp and is also single compared to her mother, Amanda Wingfield who at that age has gentlemen callers lined up for her. The son, Tom Wingfield, works at a factory with the old high school athlete, Jim Oââ¬â¢Connor. Amanda wants Laura to marry someone but Laura often refers to herself as cripple because of a small limp she has. Amanda then asks Tom to invite over one of his friends from work so he and Laura can get to know each other. Prior to the visit, Laura realizes that the man who is coming over for dinner was once her high school crush who gave her the nickname Blue Roses after misinterpreting the word Pleurosis. Blanchard Case Analysis free essay sample
Correct the EOQ and ROP quantities for each of the five items mentioned in the case. How do the corrected figures compare with the quantities calculated in 1969 and with production volumes scheduled for the June 1972 bottling run? The corrected numbers are much smaller than the scheduled amounts. If Blanchard did produce what they had originally planned, they would have a lot of unused inventory. What are the disadvantages of the formal EOQ/ROP system and the actual system used for scheduling bottling runs at Blanchard? Which system do you prefer? What improvements can be made? A disadvantage for the formal EOQ/ROP system is that the cost of a stock out may not be fully realized until an item is actually stocked out and they are unable to fill orders. Some safety stock should be held to prevent this from happening. To go along with this, there is also unused storage space, which lowers the actual cost of holding inventory. We will write a custom essay sample on Blanchard Case Analysis or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page There are also several disadvantages for the actual system Blanchard uses. While they may have plenty of safety stock, their surplus of inventory is unnecessary. They base their forecast off of the bottlerââ¬â¢s guesses, rather than historical data. This can cause major problems (such as high holding costs), and will reduce the efficiency of the business. I prefer the EOQ/ROP system because it is based off an actual calculations, rather than intuition. It seems like it should have a more accurate forecast, and that would be better for businesses. I like to have facts and numbers in front of me, so I can see where the numbers are coming from. I am also more of a conservative person, so I understand how sometimes ââ¬Å"less is moreâ⬠. To improve Blanchardââ¬â¢s forecasting method, Hank can use historical data, experience employees, and multiple forecasting techniques to come up with the most accurate data. This way they will ensure that they have some safety stock on hand, but not too much. What should Hank Hatch recommend to his boss, Toby Tyler? Hank should recommend to his boss, Toby Tyler, that they should use the information available to them to forecast the data in the most efficient way. By using a cost efficient system, Toby Tyler can combine historical data and recommendations from his experienced workers to come up with an accurate forecast. I also think that Toby should update his historical demand forecasts on a monthly basis to ensure he is using the most recent and relevant data available. If he does this, he can create relevant forecast data that will assist in reducing costs and growing the business to its maximum potential.

Ebola Virus Essays (1044 words) - Biological Weapons,
Ebola Virus In the year 1976, Ebola climbed out of its unknown hiding place, and caused the death of 340 people. Fear gripped the victim's faces, and uncertainty tortured their minds. The people of Zaire waited outside clinics, churches and in their homes for a treatment of the horrible disease, but there was no cure. They were forced to watch people die, hoping that they would be saved from the violent death of the Ebola virus. From the year of 1976 to the present date of 1996, researchers have searched for origin and cure of the virus. Scientists have carried out numerous studies and investigations, but no one has been able to find the right explanations. Prevention of a world wide outbreak lies within the education of what the virus is capable of doing, how Ebola victims can be properly treated , and by performing prompt action to isolate the virus before it has dispersed. The Ebola virus is a member of a family of RNA viruses know as filoviruses. Marburg virus and four Ebola viruses: Ebola Zaire, Sudan, Reston and Tai are the five different viruses that have been known to cause disease in humans, while Ebola Reston only causes disease within monkeys. Filoviruses, arenaviruses, flaviruses, and bunyaviruses are the viruses responsible for causing viral hemorrhagic fevers. All forms of virus of viral hemorrhagic fever begin with fever and muscle aches. These diseases usually progress until the patient becomes very ill with respiratory problems, severe bleeding, kidney malfunctions, and shock. The conclusions of the viral hemorrhagic fever can range from a mild illness to death. Ebola viruses are spread though close personal contact with a person who is very ill with the disease. Usually the wide spread action of the virus takes place among hospital care workers or family members who were aiding an infected person. Ebola can spread by the reuse of hypodermic needles, which occurs frequently in underdeveloped countries like Zaire and Sudan, but it is unlikely to become infected by close contact with persons infected who show no symptoms. The Ebola virus spreads through the blood and is replicated in organs, including the liver, lymphatic organs, kidneys, ovaries and testes. The central lesions appear to be those affecting the vascular endothelium and the platelets. The resulting symptoms are bleeding, especially in the nose, abdomen, pericardium and vagina. Capillary leakage appears to lead to loss of intravascular volume, bleeding, shock and the acute respiratory disorder seen in fatal cases. Patients basically die of intractable shock. Those with severe illness often have fevers and are delirious, combative and difficult to control. Some victims of the Ebola virus, one out of ten people infected, survive the virus's deadly operations. Due to its self limiting nature, the Ebola virus is known to sometimes die out within a person before killing the host organism. Just like the history of wars and other social epidemics, the Ebola outbreaks need to be remembered and learned from. The first two Ebola outbreaks were in 1976, in the countries of Zaire and western Sudan. These were large outbreaks, resulting in more than 550 cases and 340 deaths. In 1979, Ebola mysteriously appeared in Sudan causing 34 cases and 22 fatalities. The most recent Ebola Zaire outbreak started with a surgery on a suspected Malaria patient in Kikwit, Zaire on April 10, 1995. As in the 1976 outbreak, secondary transmission of the virus in Kikwit occurred though close personal contact with infectious blood and other body fluids. Members of the surgical team then developed symptoms similar to those of a viral hemorrhagic fever disease. The Ebola Zaire in Kikwit spread quickly, but investigation and control of the outbreak come from a combined effort of medical teams from the Centers for disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization, Belgium, France, and South African countries. Since July 1, 1995, 233 deaths have been reported among the 293 cases. So has the Ebola virus ever made it to the United States? This question has come up in various letters to editors, and in FAQ (frequently asked questions) on the Internet. Truth is that in 1989 monkeys infected with Ebola Reston were imported to Reston, Virginia from the Philippines. Importation of African Green and rhesus monkeys was immediately brought to a halt, and was not resumed until the virus responsible for the quick deaths of these monkeys was analyzed. The scariest characteristic about the Ebola Reston was that it was known to have been airborne, and that it was efficiently killing the monkeys that had been imported form the

Criminal Mythology Produces a Distorted View of Reality
Criminal Mythology Produces a Distorted View of Reality Criminal mythology is a belief of what crime is, and what causes crime. The concept evaluates the qualification of an act as a crime. In addition, it also analyses the causes of crime, and the common belief about the real reasons behind crime. While some people propose that crime is a natural phenomenon, others believe that it is an action initiated through free will.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Criminal Mythology Produces a Distorted View of Reality specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More On the other hand, some of the myths support a theory that the criminal mind is a result of social orientation, and can be corrected through appropriate measures (Lombroso et al, 2006). The society regards many criminals with contempt. Consequently, the society rejects and condemns a criminal for the crime he or she has committed. The perspective of the society is that crime is not a rational act since the circumstance of the event of a crime is not evaluated. In fact, most of the common myths about the criminal mind are misguided by tradition and the values of culture in the particular society in question. For a criminal, there is a substantial reason behind every action that he or she does. Either the crime is a result of rational evaluation of the circumstances that the criminal faces or the criminal has an abnormal approach of evaluating situations (Young, 1996). Sometimes, people claim that a person who commits crime acts in the direction that avoids direct confrontation with the predicament of the circumstances. In this case, an act of crime that has been committed once is not likely to be repeated, since the probability of the circumstances of the crime recurring are minimal. In a different perspective, one may choose to see the crime for what it is. In this essence, a person who has committed a crime is guilty of the offence and is subject to some corrective measures to prevent the crime from happening a gain in the particular society. Even when the circumstances of the crime are convincing from the perspective of the evaluator, the criminal remains guilty of the gravity of the entire action done. It is considered that the criminal has the mind to commit the crime before the event itself. This myth assumes that there is always an alternative way to deal with a situation. In this regard, the criminal should take a course that does not aggravate the law. Crime is considered a result of the state of mind, and not the circumstances. Thus, the person behind an act of crime is liable for the event of crime.Advertising Looking for essay on criminology? Let's see if we can help you! Serial murder, in the understanding of the contemporary society, is the killing of more than two people by one killer within a relatively short time. The reason behind murders committed by serial murderers is not physical. It is widely accepted that serial murderers kill for psychological reasons. One reason is that the murderer seeks to satisfy an intense urge to take a life, and the second reason is that the murderer has some mental defect, which makes him or her result to a violent reaction to some kind of aggravation. Although modern explanations of the reasons behind serial murders are relatively accurate, there is disagreement between experts of psychology over the cause of the mental disturbances behind murders. Serial murder is a crime that has been subject to association with paranormal activities more than any other offence (Warner, 1999). When successive murders occurred in a society in ancient times, people sought to explain the murders through superstition. Accounts of demons being the culprits behind murders were common in ancient times. Superstitions continued to evolve with time, and were applied in all soci eties until the beginning of twentieth century. Today, most of the ancient myths about murders have been discarded, but people have resulted to forging other unrealistic explanations of the force behind crime. Some crimes have been explained by the society in a bizarre way. Several myths about crime have existed for a long time in history. Vampires are believed to be degenerated forms of human beings who commit murder, and feast on human flesh and blood. This myth proposes that murderous criminals are vampires. This means that some form of demonic spirits possess the criminals. The demons are the reason behind crime according to this myth. The legend of the vampires originated in Europe. During the nineteenth century, the myths about the vampires had spread such that the influence on people resulted to execution of those they thought were vampires, or exhibited such behaviour (Summers, 2003). This myth ignores the reality and the circumstances in which the crime was committed. It is an easier way to explain a crime, rather than accept that another individual is behind the heinous act. When a crime was committed, people would assume that a vampire was behind the crime. The grievous act was usually murder. This is because people believed that the vampire needed to feed on the blood of the victims. The residents of a neighbourhood would then go to a grave yard to perform some rituals to identify the vampire. Once a grave was identified, the corpse would be exhumed and examined for signs of vampire activity. When the guilty corpse was identified, people would then perform rituals on it to kill the vampire spirit in it. These kinds of interpretations of crimes avoided the reality and the real criminals continued to live free. Serial murders were the most common crime associated with myths. This crime was associated with monsters with supernatural power more than any other crime. Perhaps this is because of the gravity and mysterious nature of serial murders. People wanted to find an answer to the mysteries. Werewolves are other mythical creatures thought to be capable of committing crime. Werewolves are mythical humanlike creatures with the ability to switch their appearance between a human figure and a wolf figure. According to myths, a person became a werewolf through a bite from another werewolf, or through a spell that was cast on a human being. The myth of the werewolves appeared in Europe in the nineteenth century. However, it is thought that the myth was forged out of another ancient Greek myth. The myth supposes that a person was changed into a wolf by a god after committing murder. Werewolves were believed to have long fingernails, and fed on human remains. These mythical creatures were accused of murders in Europe. Often, people would be accused of being werewolves, and committing a grievous crime. These people would then be cut to examine if they had fur in their flesh. Punishment would be administered to people for being werewolves without seeking to establish the real criminal behind a crime.Advertising Looking for essay on criminology? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Other treatments such as forced conversion to Christianity were the most potent ways of dealing with werewolves according to beliefs. Serial murders would be attributed to werewolves, which had the speed and the strength beyond any human capability (Donnell, 1996). The two myths discussed above represent common ancient myths about crime. Although the two myths are not common in todayââ¬â¢s society, they are similar concerning contemporary beliefs about crime. The myths are used to escape reality. Human beings seek solution for every event that they observe. Failure to get a logical explanation regarding a crime may lead to people blaming supernatural creatures with powers beyond our capabilities (Samenow, 2012). This effectively puts a case of a crime to rest since there are no efforts put towards trying to solve the crime. When a society has deep beliefs in such myths, it is difficult to objectively investigate a crime, and result to an appropriate reaction. In 1888, a string of murders occurred in a poor region in London city. These murders were of similar characteristics and were thought to have been perpetrated by one person. However, the assumption that a single killer committed the murders was a result of the attention that the media directed towards the incidents. The popular belief led to the christening of the killer as ââ¬Å"Jack the ripperâ⬠. In addition, the murders were brutal, and whoever committed the murder exhibited signs of mental defects. This is because the murders were committed by slitting of the throats of the victims. In some cases, the corpses were found without some parts and organs. At one point during the height of publicity of the incident in the media, a letter purported to be from the killer, claiming responsibility, was sent to the authorities. Authorities could not establish whether the letter came from the murderer. Police suspected that the letter came from a person who wanted to escalate publicity of the incidents. The victims of the murders in London were prostitute women in a slum settlement. Moreover, the inhabitants of the slum were of various ethnic backgrounds. Persistent economic strain and the racial tension that prevailed within the community in the area could be the cause of the murders according to authorities. Not all murders of the London city could be associated to one killer by the authorities. However, five of the murders had a similar pattern. All the same, the police could not effectively deny that one person had committed over twelve murders due to lack of proof. In one incident, a victim claimed to have been attacked by a gang of three and not one person. However, the media associated the murder with the serial killer. The media played a big role in making the murders appear heroic. The media portrayed the serial killer as a defiant force that could not be apprehended (Eddleston, 2001). Due to glorification of the ability of the murderer to evade police, the killer was asso ciated with mythical supernatural power. However, the police associated the murders with racial tension or and occultism. The murders in London portray events of extreme and brutal violence. Mysterious supernatural powers could not be the killer behind the murders. One of the reasons that point objectively towards crime is the fact that the corpses of the victims were missing body parts in most of the incidences. It is only in one case in which the victim was not severely mutilated. However, signs of an interrupted mutilation session were evident. While the media portrayed the killer as a hero, the reality is that the murders were brutal crimes committed by a person or people with a motive. The loss of organs in most of the bodies supports this fact. According to the nature of the murders, they seemed to be premeditated actions. In all multiracial communities, racial tension is common. In extreme occurrences, members of a certain community commit gruesome murders. An example of such murders is the London incidents. Most of conflicts between communities result in grievous violence and even murder. For example, the black race has been associated with crime especially in areas where it is the minority. In countries were racial segregation has been a norm in recent history, conflict between races is more intense. It is true that some races have a high tendency of crime than others. However, the significantly higher rate of crime among members of these races is not directly associated with the unique physical characteristics of the particular race. Extreme deprivation of material resources and racial oppression is the major reason why some races have a higher crime rate. For example, the black race in America has exhibited high crime rate among its members for quite a long time. People of other racial descents associate this phenomenon with the nature of the black race. The race is portrayed as naturally evil, and ready to commit crime at any time given the right e nvironment (Adams, 2010). This is a typical myth around the world, where the black people are stereotyped as criminals. The proponents of the myth ignore the plight of black people over centuries. Black people established as minority race in countries where they were sold as slaves throughout the first and the second millennia AD. It is not until late twentieth century, the black people were recognised as an equal race among other supposedly superior races. The deprivation of resources, and the segregation that prevailed prior to the middle of the twentieth century, pressured members of the black race to engage in criminal activities. Poverty and psychological torture elicited violent reaction from members of the black race over time (Friedman, 2004). Due to the continued social oppression of members of the black race, racial tension has arisen between the races such that given an opportunity, a black person is likely to do harm to a member of any other major race. This phenomenon i s common among members of all minority communities. In the United States, all minority communities who have experienced political, social, or economic deprivation have a higher tendency to commit crime (Winerman, 2004). Association of minority races with crime is a contemporary myth concerning the likelihood of a person to commit a crime. While the statistical figures supporting association of racial differences and variation in crime are true, the reason behind the differences is often a myth. References Adams, A. (2010, February 9). Matlab problem Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Matlab problem - Assignment Example The source code done in matlab contains the models to implement the linear regression functions (Martinez & Martinez 39). In the general equation y = a1x + a0, y is replaced by PV, x by indicator and variable a, by aA. This gives the relationship between the X-axis and the Y-axis (Seber and Lee 63). The three expected output results are scattered dots for data output, one line for regression and standard deviation, one line for standard deviation and the third line for regression line of The first step of developing this system involves the identification of the variables to use in the regression analysis. In this program, the two variables identified are PV and Indication of the solar irradiation. The next step is to develop models for linear regression to determine the relationship between the dependent and the independent variable (Chatterjee and Hadi 57). The third step is to develop a matlab source code file containing the model and able to access the source of data to be analysed. The fourth step is to test the program and remove errors. Since the source code has been developed in matlab software, testing is done by executing the linearregression.m script. If any error is found to prevent the output from appearing, necessary correction is done in the source code (Weisberg 49). The range of the y axis was between 5 and 50 while the x axis was set from 4 to 24. The results were successfully displayed as expected and all the three lines were drawn by the program. The standard deviation for the two variables is 2.34. This indicates that the two variables deviated from the actual mean by a difference of about 2.34. The program was successful in implementing the linear regression between the two variables (Groß 42). It revealed that there is a positive correlation between PV output and the indication of solar irradiation. The scatered dots generate the best fit represented by the regression

Tobacco Shop Franchising Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Tobacco Shop Franchising - Essay Example The reason stems out of the fact that people are often more aware of the product or service offered by a franchise and prefer it to those offered by lesser-known outlets. Another benefit of signing the franchising agreement is that the franchisor has already proved that the operations in this market conducted in this particular manner can be successful. As the Pipe Dreams has been around for eight years and has established a network of franchisees, of which it is known that they have had a high success rate in the past, one can be certain the franchisor has proved that the chosen layout and location of the tobacco shops, the developed pricing policy and assortment of the tobacco goods offered are successful. Moreover, for Ralph Emerson to be able to run his tobacco shop effectively he needs the knowledge and feeling of the goods' peculiarities and the consumer preferences. Probably, in his previous career as a librarian he may have accumulated some knowledge about the tobacco and cigars, most probably through the hobby, but it can not be compared to the expertise of the well-known tobacconist whose ideas have proven their validity during the eight-year period. Therefore, the training and guidance in the assortment choice and the shop decoration is of high importance in this case.

Metaphysical Thought Of Thomas Aquinas Philosophy Essay
Metaphysical Thought Of Thomas Aquinas Philosophy Essay Each science studies beings in a specific and determinate way. According to Aristotle, metaphysics studies the being in general, leaving aside their particular determinations.à [1]à Metaphysics thus, studies being qua being and what belongs essentially to it.à [2]à One of the concerns of metaphysics is what Aristotle termed as substance to indicate what, in fact, has existence in time and space, being subjected to the action of natural laws. Aristotle says: Clearly, then, the investigation of all things qua things belong to one science. Now in every case a science is concerned mainly with that which is first, both as that on which the others depend, and as that through which the others are named. Accordingly, if this is a substance, it is of substances that the philosopher should possess the principles and causes.à [3]à According to Aristotles metaphysical account, there is a distinction between what is apprehended by intuition and what is grasped by the intellect, between substance and essence. He says: Substances are also the parts which are constituents in substances taken in the first sense, which limit these substances and indicate a this, and without which the whole is annihilated. () The essence, whose formula is a definition, is also said to be the substance of each thing. The term a substance, then has two senses: it means the ultimate subject which is not predicated of something else, and also that which is a this and is separable, such being the shape or the form of each thing.à [4]à For Aristotle, substances are related to what exist in fact in the world, and about essence it is possible to say that, despite of the fact that it is part of the determination of the being, it has only conceptual existence. Aquinas adopted some of the presuppositions from Aristotles metaphysics in his ontology: such as all other sciences, metaphysics is causal, since it studies the principles through which beings are what they are.à [5]à Furthermore, Aquinas had to redefine some aspects and terminology of his predecessors in order to create his own metaphysical account. Staring with entia, given in sense experience it should be called substances. Each substance forms a complete whole, endowed with a structure that constitutes on ontological unity, or a unity of being. Insofar as a substance can be understood as one and defined, it is given the name essence. Essence is only substance insofar as it can be defined, it is what the definition says substance is. This is also a description of reality.à [6]à In Aquinas study of metaphysical beings, it is possible to assume that they can be analyzed in two distinct ways: as having a determinate form which distinguish themselves; or as existing in a strict sense, called respectively essentialist and existentialist perspectives by F. C. Coplestonà [7]à . Considering the essentialist approach, Aquinas affirms that all beings have an essence which establishes a certain form to these beings: Because, a being in this sense is divided by the ten categories, essence must mean something common to all the natures trough which different beings are placed in different genera and species, as for example humanity is the essence of man, and so with regard to other things. Because the definition telling what a thing is signifies that by which a thing is located in its genus or species, philosophers have substituted the term quiddity for the term essence.à [8]à Considering the second way, the existentialist approach, beings existing in a strict sense, it is possible to realize that this book or this man are actually part of this world, inserted in space and subjected to the natural and causal laws. Here Aquinas makes a distinction between essence and existence. Therefore, after looking for reality in the sensible qualities of beings, then in their essences, then in their substances, philosophy had finally realized through Aquinas that true reality is actual essence.à [9]à Having an essence, means being able to be inserted into a genre and be part of a species through a specific difference. One can note that, given elements actually exist in time and space. Armand Maurer explains that Aquinas intends to expose the meaning of the terms a being and an essence, how being and essence are found in the different orders of reality, and the relation they have to our logical notions of genus, species and difference.à [10]à According to Gilson, existence is a condition for being, essence and all that can be studied by metaphysics and the core of reality. In Thomas technical language, the term esse means actual existence. It is the way a thing, which he calls res, is a being, an ens. It is to be that makes a certain thing to be a being. Esse is defined by its essence, namely that which the thing is.à [11]à By essentialism, it is possible to answer the following question: what something is? The definition, so states the essence of beings in general. For material substances, essence means the matter form composite subject to perception. Aquinas makes an analogy of the terms essence and existence to what Aristotle had made to the terms potency and act. Thus, the essence is the possibility that something determined to come into existence. By existentialism, the existence, in turn, is the upgrade of essence. This distinction between essence and existence as occurs with matter and form, act and potency, it is a logical one. Aquinas says: Everything that receives something from another is potential with regard to what it receives, and what is received in its actuality. The quiddity or form, therefore, which is the intelligence, must be potential with regard to the being it receives from God, and this being is received as an actuality.à [12]à Copleston explains that essence is that which answers the question what a thing is; it is substance considered as definable. It is clear that essence is that which is signified by the definition of a thing. In the case of material things the word essence signifies that which is composed of matter and form. Existence, on the other hand, is the act by which an essence or substance is or has a being. Existence denotes a certain act; for a thing is not said to exist by the fact that it is in potentiality but by the fact that it is in act. Essence is the potential metaphysical component in a thing, while existence is the act by which essence has being.à [13]à After having analyzed Aristotles and Aquinas concepts on essence and substance, it is possible to realize that Aquinas starting point to his metaphysics is Aristotles ontology, which is based in the doctrine of being qua being, or substance, the primary kind of being. From the distinction between essence and existence, as understood by Aquinas predecessors, such as Boethius and Avicenna, Aquinas goes beyond the Aristotelian metaphysics, to show that the final foundation of the ontology is not the substance but existence. Thus, St. Thomas establishes the metaphysical assumptions necessary to built his own metaphysical thought. 1,371 words

Dear Skooter :: Arthur Koestler Music Creativity Essays
Dear Skooter, How is it going? It seems to be an eternity since I last talked to you. As for me I am over here at MIT working from sunup to sunset. There is little time for fun anymore and I seem to have lost my sense of the little pleasures in life. That is what MIT will do for you. Well enough said about me, what about you? How is the band doing? I remember last time I saw you guys performing was at the senior field day. You guys did great by the way. I miss the old days when we used to jam out, out in the garage with you playing the guitar and me beating away at the drums. Hard to believe that I enjoyed playing music so much that I haven't touched a drumstick over here at MIT since I left in June. On another note it may seem a surprise but I thought of writing to you because the other day I came across a short essay by Arthur Koestler discussing creativity and the three domains that compose it; the "Haha!", the "Aha" and "Ah... ". At first I thought his theories could not relate to a musician because I mean what performing music has to do with laughing and crying. But as I fmished reading it, it seemed to make sense when I thought of what goes on when you perform on stage. In his essay Koestler introduces a new theory that describes the three domains of creativity that he discusses "artistic originality, scientific discovery, and comic inspiration". To better understand the domains he paired each one up with a reaction: comic inspiration - "Haha!", scientific discovery ââ¬â "Aha", and finally artistic originality ââ¬â "Ah..." Before I further dwell into describing his ideas we need to establish a term commonly used by Koestler in his essay, which is bisociation. In bisociation, two or more different frames of reference are combined to coexist on several planes at once. The three reactions follow no set sequence, the "Haha" is caused by the "collision of the bisociated contexts", and the "Aha" feeling can be associated with the word "eureka" who signals their fusion into a solution with truth to it and the "Ah..." reactions signals an emotion brought on by an artist focusing on beauty. Do you see what I mean by not having understood what it has to do with creativity?

Home-Coming Analysis Essay
Good morning/afternoon teacher and classmates. Last week, our group was designated to analyse the poem Home-Coming by Australian poet Bruce Dawe, who was born in 1930 in Geelong, Victoria. Out of the four siblings in the family, he was the only one to ever attend a proper secondary school. Previously being a part of the Royal Australian Air Force in 1959, his purpose for writing this particular poem was because of the Vietnam War, which claimed a seemingly endless number of lives. This really angered him and so he dedicated this poem to the casualties during the war. In our analysis of the poem, we noticed that the poem effectively incorporated a variety of useful techniques which significantly enhanced the subtle meaning behind the poem. With the clever use of language and structural devices, Bruce Dawe was really able to augment his views and exhibit his true perspective upon war. Some techniques utilised throughout the passage were similes, repetition and irony, just to name a fe w. In a nutshell, the poem revolves around soldiers apparently coming home from the destructive course of war to their loved ones. From the title of ââ¬Å"Home-Comingâ⬠, the audience gain an implication of relief and happiness and it insinuates a positive atmosphere. However, later on in the poem this is found to not be the case as the status of all the soldiers are revealed to be deceased. As soon as we read this, we quickly picked up on the fact that it was an anti-war poem. In our points of view, we believe the poem resembles an elegy because of its depressing mood. Also, our group thought that the poet was striving to depict the soldiers as unimportant and expendable through a satirical perspective as well as showing us how little respect they gain from laying their lives down for our freedom. To begin with, the first device embedded in the first section of the poem is repetition. The repetition of the word ââ¬Å"dayâ⬠in the quote ââ¬Å"All day, day after dayâ⬠presents a tedious mood in which time is moving extremely slowly and almost seems perpetual when we read it. This technique has such a strong and potent effect on the audience as it is applied in the opening lines of the poem, which forces us to have an immediate reaction. Also, the word ââ¬Å"theyââ¬â¢reâ⬠is continuously written later on in the poem, such as ââ¬Å"theyââ¬â¢re bringing them in, theyââ¬â¢re zipping them upâ⬠. By doing this, Dawe attempts toà show a somewhat mechanical and constant process of the storage of corpses, thus displaying the soldiers with the qualities of inanimate objects and not worthy of have equality to human beings. Repetition is an important aspect in this poem and gives us the stereotypical view on the soldiers fighting at war. In addition to this, Dawe includes a descriptive array of similes that paint very vivid images in the minds of the audience, which allow them to picture the particular scene that the poet is trying to conjure. As a result, the composer is able to manipulate the imagination of readers and stimulate them into thinking about a specific theme through the use of words. In this case, Bruce Dawe induces strong visual imagery that promotes a lonely, mournful and silent atmosphere. An example of this mood is demonstrated in the quote ââ¬Å"telegrams tremble like leaves from a wintering treeâ⬠. To base an image upon a ââ¬Å"wintering treeâ⬠provides negative connotations whilst also allowing Dawe to take advantage of words to reinforce the depressing mood of the text. Because of this, the strong meaning behind the similes used is an essential component in the poem of Home-coming. Finally, the last technique adopted in the poem sparingly but effectively is irony. Dawe entices the audience to positive emotions such as hope and relief through the title of ââ¬Å"Home-comingâ⬠which obviously is supposed to spark happiness. However, in this case, the poet deceptively turns our hope into confusion as the text then turns to a melancholy mood through quotes such as ââ¬Å"theyââ¬â¢re picking them up, those they can findâ⬠. The intended reaction that Bruce Dawe wants from the audience is shock, because as we read on, the soldiers are disclosed as dead people. This is where the irony lies as the content of the poem and its atmosphere almost completely contradicts the message that the title is insinuating. Furthermore, another instance of irony is the phrase ââ¬Å"frozen sunsetâ⬠. Once again, these words build up a cold and desolate basis for the mood of the poem. Bruce Dawe has combined a number of techniques such as irony and similes in this anti-war poem that makes the audience wonder about the terrible effects of war and the devastation it can bring to families. It persuades them toà see through the faà §ade of war with the twisted but true contrasts of the title and content of the poem. As well as this, the text tries to make us consider the way that we act in regards to soldiers and we they should respect them more as they are the reason why our freedom is able to be reserved for the future generations.

Personal Narrative The First Show - 1313 Words
The First Show The big day had finally arrived after nearly ten months of preparation. It was the day of my very first dance recital! I had practiced my routine in dance class and at home constantly with the watchful eye of my mother helping me. My costume was ready and so was I. I woke up to my Mother gently waking me up reminding me that today was a very important day. I then jumped up out of bed remembering that today was my very first dance recital. ââ¬Å"Yay, itââ¬â¢s finally here!â⬠I screamed, jumping up and down on my bed. My little brother was already awake so I didnââ¬â¢t have any fear of waking him up from his slumber. I could already smell the breakfast that my Mom and Dad were making me in the kitchen. I climbed down off of my bed and walked to the kitchen where my Dad was making pancakes, my favorite breakfast food, and my Mom had my little brother Brad on her hip. ââ¬Å"Good Morning Daddy,â⬠I chimed running over to my Dad and giving him a hug. ââ¬Å"Good Morning Princess,â⬠he responded while smiling. How do we see Capulet and Juliets relationship changing Essay Example For Students
How do we see Capulet and Juliets relationship changing? Essay Romeo and Juliet is one of the most moving love stories ever written. The tale of young Juliet, her secret husband Romeo, and the tragedy which overtakes them has been admired by theatre goers for centuries. Much of the plays appeal comes from the problems which Romeo and Juliet face from being with each other. Scenes, containing further plot twists increase the tension of the play and heighten the intensity of the final scenes. One scene which does just that is Act 3 Scene 5. This scene is pivotal to the play in many ways. At the start of the scene Romeo bids farewell to Juliet and flees the city. This is important as without the seperation Romeo would never have received an inaccurate message. Therefore he would have known the truth about Juliets death and so would not have killed himself. The play would then not have its climactic finale, nor have such a memorable conclusion. This scene is also where Juliet first finds out her parents plans to marry her to Paris. When Lady Capulet first begins to talk of a joyful event Juliet is pleased and excited, for as Juliet says joy comes well in such a needy time and wishes to have more details, what day is that? However, when it is revealed that this happy event is her marriage to Paris, her mood changes completely, he shall not make me there a joyful bride. This is important as it shows the change in Juliets attitude from a girl willing to obey her familys commands, to being shocked at the speed of a marriage which has been arranged without her knowledge, I wonder at this haste. This is important to the play as it reveals a huge, seemingly insurmountable problem. Juliet has now been put into an extremely awkward position. She has no wish to marry Paris, on top of which she is already married. It would be against the law to marry one man when she is already wed to another. However, if she told her parents the truth they would kill Romeo in revenge. Juliet loves Romeo too much to betray him in that way. Before the talk of marrying Paris came up the story seems fairly assured of a happy ending. Now the future of the two lovers is in crisis. Without this scene the play would have been much shorter and more predictable. It changes the focus of the play instantly from a simple tale of two lovers to a desperate search by Juliet to avoid the marriage without earning the disapproval her father threatened, get thee to the church oThursday or never after look me in the face. In Juliets search for a solution she first turns to her nurse. Juliet wishes her nurse to comfort her and give her an answer, as she has always done before. But the nurse has no solution Juliet will accept. She advises Juliet that I think you are happy in this second match, and tells her that your first is dead or twere as good he were. This is important to the play as Juliet now realises she will get no help from any of the people around her. Her close relationship with her nurse is severed as Juliet vows, thou and my bosom henceforth shall be twain. Juliet no longer has her nurse to confide in, which complicates her situation and makes it harder to find a solution. This scene is an integral part of the play. In it the plot becomes more complicated and we discover the full implications of what Juliet has done, by wedding Romeo she cannnot marry the man her parents have chosen. It also ends Romeo and Juliets love scenes. It can be seen as their farewell, for they will never talk together again. The scene also adds to the complexity of Juliets problem. Whereas before she could always rely on her nurse for support, she is now completely alone. This increases the tension, as Juliet frantically tries to think of a workable solution. Without this scene there would be no tension and less emotion in the remainder of the play. The ending would be happy, thus reducing the play to a simple, forgettable, love story. To compare and contrast to film adaptations of William Shakespeare's play 'Romeo+Juliet' and to focus on the following scenes EssayAnother important change in character attitudes occurs during this scene. Capulet and Juliets father-daughter relationship changes irrevocably in this scene. When we first meet Capulet he is worried about Juliet and does not want her rushed into marriage. When Paris expresses an interest in marrying Juliet, Capulet says that let two more summers wither in their pride, ere we may think her ripe to be a bride. Capulet is very proud of his daughter and thinks she is the hopeful lady of the earth. This shows how much Capulet loves and cares for his daughter. He is very proud of her beauty and does not wish her to get married unless she is wooed, and Paris does get her heart. He also believes that his will to her consent is but a part. Capulet thinks that Juliets consent is more important that what he wants for her himself. This is due to the fact that Juliet has always been a good and obedient child. Capulet has no fears that she would refuse someone he picked, so it is safe to make promises which rely on her co-operation. When Capulet finds out of Juliets refusal in Act 3 Scene 5, he is as much shocked as angry at first, How? Will she have none? Doth she not give us thanks? Is she not proud? He does not think that she would truly disobey him in such a thing. When Juliet repeats her refusal he becomes more angry and begins to call her names like Mistress minion. Not only is Capulet angry but he must also be a little scared. If Juliet got her way and did not marry Paris then Capulet would be the laughing stock of the town and his reputation would be in ruins. This could be the cause of the ferocity of his threats, when he tells Juliet to go with Paris to Saint Peters church, or I will drag thee on a hurdle hither. He also begins to insult her more, calling her a tallow face, and a green-sickness carrion. Juliet still loves her father and does not wish to do anything which upsets him. She hopes that he will respect her wishes and be the caring father he has always been. She desperately tries to get him to see her point of view by begging to him, Good father, I beseech you on my knees. How ever Capulet is now extremely upset with Juliet. He does not understand why she is disobeying him, when she has always been so obedient in the past. Now, instead of being my child, she is a disobedient wretch. Capulet still believes this is just childish stubborness, so repeats his threats in the hope of getting Juliet to realise the mistake she is making by refusing. Capulet would have known how much Juliet loved him, so threatening to withdraw his love is one of his most effective threats, get thee to the church o Thursday, or never after look me in the face. It is possible to sympathise with Capulet in this scene. He obviously cares for his daughters happiness but feels he cannot back down over the marriage as he has already promised Paris that Juliet shall be his. Capulet does not know of Juliets marriage to Romeo and cannot see any problem with Paris, calling him a gentleman of noble parentage. By the end of the scene Capulet has delivered his final ultimation to Juliet. Either she marries Paris, or she is free to hang, beg, starve, die in the streets. This shows how much their relaionship has changed. From being Capulets only child, who he cared deeply about, Juliet has caused him to turn against her. Though he may still love her he cannot show it as she has disobeyed him. Juliet still loves her father but is now trying to think of a way out of the marriage. We can tell that Juliet does not wish to displease her father as she has not totally refused Pariss offer and been disowned like Capulet threatened. Instead she is trying to find a way around it without upsetting her father any more than is possible.

What is an operating system.docx Essays - Computer Architecture

NEGA LAKEW Operating SYstems What is an operating system? An operating system (OS) is a set of programs that coordinates all the activities among computers or mobile devices hardware. It is the software that supports a computer or mobile devices basic functions, such as scheduling tasks, executing applications, and controlling peripherals. All programs within a computer or mobile device require an operating system in order to be able to function. Operating systems are generally already in place on the device, but can be updated and sometimes even modified to the users liking. An OS needs to be efficient. It should respond the user in a proactive way. Also, it uses the system resources without wastage and efficiently. An OS should be flexible enough to incorporate new functions in the system without any interference with the services. There are two main reasons why operating systems have been developed. First is that it allocates and uses computer resources in different tasks. Secondly, it acts as an interface between computer hardware and programmer. OS allows the application programs to be created and debugged. There are five main services that are provided by an OS. The first service that OS provides is program execution. OS is responsible for providing a safe environment to run user programs. On the back end, OS handles memory management and scheduling of the program. The user doesn't need to worry about these things. When the user asks for a program to run, OS allocates a memory and schedules the process accordingly. Once the program is finished, the memory is de-allocated. The second service that an OS takes care of is handling input and output operations. Every program running in the system has an input and produces an output. The OS hides the information of hardware underneath. When an interrupt occurs by an input/output devices, OS runs the interrupt handler routine. The user level programs are not made to handle input/output. The third service provided by an OS is manipulation of the file system. The read/write feature done in file is handled by the OS which are created by OS in the file system using system calls. The user does not need to worry about how the file will be created and becomes visible to him once created by the OS. Secondary storage management is also done by the operating system itself. It is very critical to handling input/output efficiently, which mainly depends on the storage management. This also affects the speed of various programs. It is not preferable to leave the management of secondary storage to user programs and should be handled by the OS itself. The fourth service that OS provides is communication. The processes need to communicate with each other in order to share the information. The communication can take place between two programs running on the same machine or different ones. This way the user can easily pass messages to other computers through the network. The user program is written keeping in mind the hardware through which message is sent. The fifth, and one of the most important services is error detection. One main concern in any system is an error detection. In order to avoid errors occurring, the operating system keeps track of the errors or exception occurring in the system. This helps the user not to worry about any errors emerging and causing any harm to the system. A user program is not capable to handle this service because it is not given any rights to allocate or de-allocate memory without OS permissions. For example, if a CPU gets stuck in an infinite loop, the user program might not be able to handle it as this permission is not given to it. What does an operating system contain? An operating system contains many parts including an assembler, compiler, loader, and an input and output manager. An assembler is a program that translates an assembly language program to machine language. An assembly language is particular for each operating system and varies accordingly. A compiler or an interpreter is responsible for processing high level machine languages like C++, Java,

8 Bad Habits that Make You Look Unprofessional
8 Bad Habits that Make You Look Unprofessional Everyone has some bad work habits. You might be the most punctual, inoffensively friendly person around, but thereââ¬â¢s always something that occasionally causes colleagues to roll their eyes. Itââ¬â¢s a fact of life- none of us is perfect. However, recognizing these bad habits, and working hard to correct them, can do a lot to keep your work reputation as high as possible. Here are 8 bad habits that make you look unprofessional. 1. Being a Debbie DownerYou know the type- the other shoe is always about to drop, the successful completion of one project just means another one is around the corner, everyone else is just so incompetent all the time. You may not even realize how much youââ¬â¢re complaining, but itââ¬â¢s definitely something to keep an eye on.2. ProcrastinatingCounterintuitively, multitasking makes it so much easier to procrastinate: ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll do these three things now, and that other thing later.â⬠Then that fourth thing gets pushed back, and pu shed back until itââ¬â¢s a week later and youââ¬â¢re still not done with it. This is especially problematic if the delayed task is something needed by someone else, because then it makes you look undependable.3. OverpromisingOverpromising is dangerous, because either you set yourself up for an onslaught of extra work, or you fail to deliver, which means your professionalism takes a hit. Colleagues and bosses need to know they can depend on you to deliver on time, and part of that is knowing the limits of what you can and canââ¬â¢t do within a certain timeframe.4. Trying to please everyoneBeing a people-pleaser is an impulse that comes naturally to a lot of usâ⬠¦after all, you want everyone to think youââ¬â¢re awesome at delivering awesomeness. But that can easily shift over into Pushoverville, where people take advantage of your eager nature. It can also come off as sucking up, or cause frustration when youââ¬â¢re trying to placate one boss who wants things one wa y, a colleague who wants them another way, and someone from a different department who needs things done a third way. Itââ¬â¢s much better to use your judgment find the best way to handle something, and make sure that everyone knows why youââ¬â¢re doing it your way.5. Swearing like a pirateMany workplaces have become more casual in dress and attitude in general, but that doesnââ¬â¢t mean itââ¬â¢s okay to swear up a storm, especially when youââ¬â¢re talking about work. Everyone has slip-ups when theyââ¬â¢re especially frustrated, but if you drop the f-bomb in front of coworkers more than a few times, it shows a lack of professionalism and care about how you present yourself in public. In terms of self-restraint, think broadcast network standards, not HBO.6. Running lateThereââ¬â¢s always a reason- traffic on the commute, dog ate the car keys, your favorite TV chef was showing you how to make bacon soufflà ©s on the Today Show. Chronic lateness just never makes y ou look good, even if you have one of those jobs where it doesnââ¬â¢t really matter if youââ¬â¢re at your desk at 9:00 or 9:20. Being there on time (except in those times when there really is a terrible commute) shows everyone that youââ¬â¢re ready to get things done.7. Making excusesWhen things go wrong, donââ¬â¢t be that guy/gal who always has a bunch of excuses ready to go. Excuses sound exactly like what they are, and when you use them, everyone around knows it. If things go wrong, own it and resolve to move on, and people will respect your honesty and drive to get things right.8. Being too flirtyBoundaries? What boundaries? Even if the flirting is harmless, you donââ¬â¢t want to run afoul of any sexual harassment policies your company has- especially if you donââ¬â¢t know the flirtee very well. Also, if it seems like youââ¬â¢re flirting to get ahead at work, that wonââ¬â¢t endear you to your colleagues. Complimenting coworkers is fine, but try to keep it brief, friendly, and professional.Do any of these sound uncomfortably familiar to you? If so, donââ¬â¢t worry- we all have stuff to work on when it comes to workplace behavior. And thereââ¬â¢s always time to recognize, correct, and start fresh!
